SANTA MONICA MIRROR: ENOUGH SOUL TO LIGHT UP A HARLEM
CHURCH - Soulsville: Souled Out ‘n Sanctified by Danny
Brooks & The Rockin’ Revelators proves that Gospel
Blues can pack a divine wallop. While Blues often seize upon
being pulled down by the sorrow of life, Gospel always
looks up to the afterlife. Put them together and you
have the power of sorrow and the glory of hope. If that
weren’t enough, the Toronto-based Brooks’ singing has
enough soul to light up a Harlem church on Sunday morning.
With Bluesmen like guitarist Colin Linden and
organist
Richard Bell along for the ride, Brooks’ album
is like driving a cherry red Cadillac to heaven with the
radio cranked.

MAGAZINE: SOULSVILLE’s
appeal transcends religious affiliation or orientation!'
- However firm our
faith, our own truths aren’t necessarily shared by
others. Beliefs are shaped by the lives we live, and it
is the wonder and the glory of music that it allows us
to share our truths in a way that renders them somehow
larger than our individual selves. SOULSVILLE: Souled
Out ‘n’ Sanctified is a Gospel record. And let’s
face it, not all of us are religious; nor, come to that, do
all share a single faith. Yet this is a work of rare power,
informed by unshakeable conviction, soaked with sweaty
passion, and oozing grit and grease in every groove. But you will believe
in Danny Brooks. Brooks was the guiding
light behind 2002’s 'Saved', NorthernBlues first foray into the Gospel genre,
his contributions providing some of that project’s most
stirring moments. Danny
Brooks wrote all the material here, and his blend of Soul,
Blues, and Country is utterly seamless. These are, quite
literally, the lyrics of his life, and there’s neither art nor
artifice in the absolute commitment with which he invests
every word. He doesn’t just sing, he testifies, with an
unquestionable and unflinching honesty; whether you share
Brooks’ belief or not, you’ll have no doubt of its strength
and its healing power. Easily among the most uplifting and
life-affirming releases of this or any year, SOULSVILLE’s appeal transcends religious affiliation or orientation.
This one gets my very highest
recommendation.

More Muscle Shoals than Donnie McClurkin!' - Fresh from his participation as a member of the NorthernBlues Gospel All Stars on the Juno nominated
'Saved', Danny Brooks is back on the Gospel highway with SOUSVILLE: 'Souled Out ‘n Sanctified'.
From the cover photo of Beale Street interposed
on a map of Southwest Tennessee to the first track 'Soulsville',
a paean to Memphis – Brooks whets the listener’s appetite for
his trademark blend of Gospel, Blues, and Roots music.
Complementing Brooks perfectly is the Rockin’
Revelators. with Hiram Joseph, Ciceal and Amoy Levoy, as well as
a host of other special guests, Brooks produces a Gospel
project that is more Muscle Shoals than Donnie McClurkin. Standout performances on
'Souled
Out ‘n Sanctified' include the poignant 'Nobody Knows You Like
the Lord,' the church rocking 'Standing on the Rock', and the Stax-steeped 'You Won’t Show.' 'Souled Out ‘n Sanctified'
will bring the sacred message to a even wider circle of music
lovers.-
