BAMA BOUND (continued) - Debi called me on my cell and she knew right away, my condition. I was about 100 miles south of Cincinnati, near Louisville KY and she convinced me to pull over and grab a good night's rest. I drove about another 100 miles south, and at Cave City, not far from Greg Martin's (Kentucky Headhunters) in Glasgow Ky., I checked in a motel. I went to sleep right away and got up 7 hours later, read my Bible, prayed, picked up my guitar and said "God, I need help".

I went over the songs for the next hour and a half and I got inside those songs like never before. I could feel it; I was in the zone and encouraged. I put my guitars away, said "thanks God, I think I'm going to be alright". Even got a song out of the ordeal "When We Sleep Angels Speak". Headed on down south on 65 and 4 hours later I pulled into Decatur Al. which is about 100 miles due south on 65 from Nashville Tn. Tell you something; all the years of doing the asphalt boogie, banging on doors in Nashville, (one time I even locked my keys in the car on music row and took me hours to get back in), doing showcases at the Bluebird Cafe, it felt pretty darn good to be just whizzin' through on my way to do a record in Decatur with Johnny Sandlin and the Muscle Shoals Giants. I rolled down the window and yelled out, "next time y'all will be callin' me and I'll probably be busy!"- I didn't really but there was something in my spirit to that effect. I got to Johnny's studio the first day and Scott Boyer and I charted out the songs. I played, he charted. I look forward to doing some writing with Scott, a great picker in the style of Steve Cropper and Eddie Hinton. When I walked into the studio the next day, which is on Johnny's home property in a beautiful wooded area bordering the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge in the Tennessee River Valley, the air was full of electricity and I met all the players and although I had regained some confidence I was still a bit nervous. David Hood was a real gent (they all were) and broke the ice in real cool way. Johnny was playing a song of mine that we were going to tackle first called 'I Believe In Love Instantly', a song with a Percy Mayfield feel that I wrote for my daughter Caitlin (just turned 15) and she had her first boyfriend earlier this year. Guess I wanted to show her I understood what she may be going through.

Anyway, David says in his laid back southern drawl, "well Danny, y'all have come to the right place, you could've been from down here" and then proceeds to ask Johnny "where'd you find this guy?" Made me feel right fine, it did. We all worked at a comfortable rate and Johnny eased us in and out of songs, stories and laughs and before the day was done we had five songs. These guys played my songs like they already knew them! In a way I guess they did as I had been drawing water form their well for years. The next day I met Spooner Oldham and that was special for me as I've always been a fan of his and Dan Penn's, who wrote 'Sweet Inspiration'. Spooner also wrote 'Out Of Left Field'/Percy Sledge, Cry Like A Baby/Box Tops, I'm Your Puppet/James & Bobby Purify, A Woman Left Lonely/Janis Joplin, and more. Get this, I'm back home 4 days earlier and watching Neil Young's new dvd at the Ryman Theatre and Spooner's on it and here we were sitting on a couch together and listening to a track and he says to me "I love your voice" and I thank him and tell him I'm a bit rough and he says "don't matter, I like it just as it is".       ...continued>>
