Souled Out 'n Sanctified: CDBABY - PAYPLAY

SOUL POWERED KNOCK-OUT - Souled Out 'n Sanctified is a Southern Soul-powered knockout. Danny Brooks & the Rockin' Revelators add gospel to the irresistible Muscle Shoals sound on cuts such as 'You Won't Show', 'Soul Satisfied', and 'Fence Me In' and, come across like the planet's most soulful country band on 'Other Side of the Cloud'. Played with conviction.  Brooks sings like a combination of Levon Helm and Eddie Hinton. How did he learn that in Toronto? -Ken Bays/www.bluesrevue.com

SOULSVILLE -'LIVE-WIRED TRACKS' - These 13 live-wire tracks, all originals, showcase Brooks' Blues voice, one that's very close to what could be considered archetypal. It growls, it's sincere and it makes lyrics come alive with it's direct approach. Recorded in Brooks' Ontario farmhouse, the disc has tunes with strong structures and deep-felt lyrics, the subtitle track Souled Out 'n Sanctified is especially notable. The passionate, mostly upbeat mood is excellent, with 'Fence Me In', 'Soul Satisfied', 'Walk That Walk' and 'Have Mercy' strong entries. At times you can really distinguish the Brooks line going straight back to rural poets and folkies of the past such as Leadbelly. -Geoff Chapman/TORONTO STAR
